Hello world! Please bear with me, for this is the first blog post of mine. It should be good to read because talking to an audience without seeing any of them is pretty easy. Words do not flow with 100 eyes staring at you, but they sure do on a Wednesday night in my living room. Even though I think this, I do believe that I am climbing in the sense of purposeful communication in my life; let me explain.

When I first came in my freshman year of football, I was not confident; that is where basecamp originated. In my sophomore and junior years, I stayed the same way because getting into some trouble and being injured is not quite the best thing for a kid with little confidence. I may have even dipped below Basecamp at some points. This year, my senior year is much different. When you spend a lot of time doing things on your own, you start to shine when it comes to talking to others. I built more knowledge than ever and started to realize that those problems were what led me to this point. I am a vocal leader on my football team now and truly believe that purposeful communication can change the perspectives of those who lack confidence and boost the confidence of the one communicating. Believe what you say so much that others have no choice but to ride with you. It brings people together.

In the reading, “What are the Habits of Mind?” I found a quote that stood out to me. “Problem solving encompasses a broad array of activities and approaches.” This is important to me because problem-solving is about the little wins. I have been in arguments with my girlfriend for 15 minutes until we figure it out. But the thing is it only works if you figure it out. Problem-solving in this case, to me, is just accepting that we do not feel the same way about something and that is okay. So instead of trying to change her mind, I am going to take the little win of letting her win even if I do not 100 percent agree.

What goes along with this as well is an integrated perspective. To solve this problem with my girlfriend, I am going to take myself out of my shoes and put on hers. Seeing that, not only do I have thoughts on one thing; she could have a different way of looking at them. Being self-aware about my physical reactions and tone of voice because people do not necessarily remember the words you speak to them, just the way you made them feel.

This picture describes my statement perfectly.

Lastly, I wanted to talk about Self-Regulated Learning. This has been the most important Habit of Mind that I have brought into my life. In the reading, What are the Habits of Mind, it states that “Self-regulated learners typically demonstrate strong commitment to the process of learning and take responsibility for their own learning.” I completely agree with what is being said here because it has shown in my life. In my senior year of high school, I started writing poems; then poems turned into songs, and songs turned into hits. I stayed away from this for a while because I was scared of what people would think of me, and to be honest, I kind of still am, but I am learning that you should not care about the people that are trying to take you down for doing something you love. I wanted to get better at songwriting, I fell in love with it, and this past winter I made a commitment to write every single night even if I could not think of what to write about. This allowed me to improve to whole new levels when I got to create these in the summer. This commitment was not forced, but attracted, and I learned that just recently.
